  • Wearability: The Safety Feature That Makes a Difference

When choosing a wearable care device for an older person or someone living with dementia, safety and reliability are essential. However, one important feature is often overlooked: wearability. The device can only help protect its wearer when it is actually being worn. If it is uncomfortable, inconvenient or unattractive, the wearer take it off and not be wearing it when it matters most. This makes wearability more than a matter of comfort or style — it is an essential part of the device's safety. Designed to be worn, every day & night To maximise wearability, a care device should feel like something the wearer genuinely wants to wear, rather than a medical device they are obliged to use. Long battery life is particularly important. A watch that requires frequent charging creates opportunities for it to be removed and forgotten. Minimising charging interruptions helps keep the device on the wrist and ready when needed. Comfort also matters. Premium materials, a lightweight design and a comfortable strap can make the watch pleasant to wear throughout the day. For people with dementia, familiar and intuitive design can be especially valuable. Familiar style, personal choice A care watch should look and feel like a traditional watch, not a bulky piece of medical equipment. An analogue clock face is familiar, easy to recognise and often less confusing than a digital screen packed with information. Offering a choice of colours and styles also allows wearers to express their personality and choose a watch that suits their taste. When a device looks attractive and feels personal, wearing it can become a natural part of the daily routine. Safety through everyday wear Ultimately, the best care watch is one that stays on the wrist. By prioritising comfort, battery life, familiar design and personal choice, care devices can become a welcome part of everyday life — helping older people maintain their independence while giving families greater peace of mind.

  • Extending Independent Living for Seniors

For many older adults, staying in their own home represents independence, routine, identity, and control over daily life. Families often want to support that independence for as long as possible, but concerns about falls and unknow medical emergencies can create uncertainty. The right safety support does not have to feel complicated. In many cases, a safety watch can provide the reassurance seniors and families need to maintain independence longer without unnecessary disruption. Why does independent living become more challenging with age? As people age, everyday risks can gradually increase. Changes in balance, muscle strength, mobility, medication side effects, or slower recovery times can make simple routines feel less predictable. A minor trip, dizziness episode, or sudden weakness may not have caused concern years ago, but over time, these moments can carry greater consequences. Families often start worrying about: Falls while alone Delayed emergency response Missed calls or unanswered check-ins Health symptoms that happen unexpectedly These concerns can lead to conversations about limiting independence, even when the senior still wants to live actively. How can a safety watch support independent living? A simple safety watch works by reducing the gap between an emergency happening and help being reached. Instead of relying on a phone being nearby, the senior has immediate access to support on their wrist. This allows them to continue living with increased confidence: · Within the Home and Garden · Going Out and about · Traveling and holiday’s · Keeping active to support healthier aging. Why do simpler devices often work better long-term? Many seniors stop using complicated technology because it feels frustrating or overwhelming. Devices with too many features, apps, or settings often sit unused. When a device feels easy to wear and simple to understand, it becomes part of daily life instead of feeling like medical equipment. When a senior knows exactly what the device does and trusts it to work when needed, they are much more likely to wear it every day. Wearability is A safety feature: device only work if it is actually being used. How do Companion Watches support independent living? At Companion all our aging loved ones use our watches so we focus on what seniors truly need: Quality, dignified watches Personalised solutions because everyone is different Fall detection and SOS emergency button to raise help quickly Clear, load Telephone calls, though the watch for a fast appropriate response Services to support Family and friends reassurance Thousands of wearers and their families use Companion to helps stay independent through simple, reliable protection. Conclusion Independent living is not just about staying at home. It is about feeling confident, capable, and supported every day. A simple safety watch can help seniors stay active and independent for longer by being on hand in an emergency for quick, easy help. • Device Confidence Through Continuous Self-Diagnostics

Companion Watches doesn't simply provide a personal alarm solution — they help the support network understand whether the device and service is continuing to work as expected. Personal alarms for the elderly provide valuable reassurance, helping older people maintain their independence while knowing that support is available in an emergency. However, an alarm is only truly reassuring if it is working properly when it is needed most. Across the UK, personal alarms range from traditional home-based systems connected to a landline or base station to wearable devices using mobile networks. While these technologies offer different benefits, one essential feature deserves greater attention: continual product self-diagnostics. A reliable personal alarm should do more than wait for an emergency call. It should regularly check its own critical components to identify potential problems before they affect the wearer's safety. This includes monitoring the battery, internal sensors, antenna and signal strength, as well as confirming that communications with the mobile network or home base station are functioning correctly. Daily diagnostic checks can help identify faults, connectivity issues or hardware problems early, allowing the wearer & their support network to take action before an emergency occurs. Ideally, the system should also provide clear notifications when a problem is detected, rather than leaving the wearer unaware that their device may not be functioning as expected. Peace of mind comes from knowing your alarm is ready when you need it. Does your current personal alarm device carry out a transparent, comprehensive, regular self-diagnostics, to provide an important additional layer of confidence for wearers, families and carers alike? Companion Watch's diagnostic advantages Daily self-diagnostics: The Companion service checks in with the watch at least daily. If a scheduled check-in fails, specific support contacts receive an alert. Optional hourly network checks: The Companion Essentials Watch can alert the support network when it encounters problems with local mobile network services, with hourly checks available as an option. Transparent performance monitoring: The Companion app gives the support network detailed visibility into battery activity and network performance, helping identify potential hardware faults or connectivity issues. Why this matters A personal alarm should do more than respond to an emergency button press or detect a fall. It should help ensure that the technology itself remains ready to provide assistance. Companion's combination of regular self-diagnostics, proactive fault alerts and accessible performance information offers an additional layer of reassurance for wearers, families and carers.

  • What is the best safety system a person with dementia is likely to wear day and night, to give their family meaningful reassurance?

Wearability is fundamental: what's the point of a cheap undesirable watch if it's not going to be worn. For someone living with dementia (Altzimers or any other cognitive impairment) , a classic, conventional analogue watch can have several advantages: It doesn't immediately announce "I am wearing a dementia monitoring device." It preserves a person's sense of identity and normality. It uncomplicated and doesn't look like a medical device. An analogue watch face is familiar for someone accustomed to traditional watches. A quality leather strap can make it feel like a proper watch, rather than an alarm strapped to the wrist. The family isn't asking the person to wear something conspicuously associated with frailty or surveillance. Discrete watch features keep the wearer safe and support network informed. If the wearer wanders, needs help or if the family just need to remotely check that all is well - then check out the Companion Watch.

  • The Power Of A Long Watch Battery Life

For older adults and people living with dementia, a care watch is only effective when it is being worn and ready to help. Yet many care watches with an always-on mobile connection last just 24 hours to three days before needing a recharge. This creates a daily challenge: keeping the device charged without leaving the wearer unprotected. More time on the wrist, less time charging A long-lasting battery makes a meaningful difference. With 120+ hours of battery life, the Companion Watch can remain on the wrist for more than five days between charges. This reduces charging interruptions, makes daily routines simpler and helps ensure the watch is there when it is needed. This extended battery life is made possible by eDRX technology, available through LTE-M connectivity. eDRX allows the watch to remain reachable over the mobile network while reducing how frequently its radio needs to listen for incoming communications. The result is a balance of continuous availability and efficient power consumption. Protection through the night The importance of long battery life becomes particularly clear overnight. Falls can happen at any time, including during nighttime trips to the bathroom, when an older person may be alone and vulnerable. A watch that needs to be removed and charged overnight cannot provide protection during those hours. By reducing the need for frequent charging, a long-lasting care watch helps keep emergency assistance within reach, day and night. Confidence that lasts Long battery life is more than a convenient feature. It supports consistent wear, reduces the risk of a device being unavailable when an emergency occurs, and gives families greater peace of mind. With 120+ hours of battery life, the Companion Watch is designed to stay on the wrist and ready to help — especially when it matters most.

  • LTE-M: Helping Stay Connected When It Matters Most

For older adults living independently, the ability to call for help in an emergency can provide reassurance to both the wearer and their loved ones. However, traditional mobile networks can struggle in rural locations, remote properties and buildings with thick walls. This is where LTE-M technology can make a meaningful difference. What is LTE-M? LTE-M (Long-Term Evolution for Machines) is a cellular network technology designed specifically for connected devices. It offers reliable communication, low power consumption and features that support devices operating in areas where conventional mobile signals may be weak. Unlike standard mobile connectivity, LTE-M incorporates enhanced coverage capabilities, including signal repetition techniques that help devices communicate with network infrastructure in challenging reception conditions. This can improve connectivity in locations such as basements, rural homes and buildings where mobile signals are often limited. Why LTE-M matters for emergency watches For an emergency care watch, dependable connectivity is essential. When a wearer experiences a fall, feels unwell or needs urgent assistance, the watch must be able to communicate with its monitoring service or emergency contacts. LTE-M can help by: Improving connectivity in weak-signal areas: Enhanced coverage features can help maintain communication where conventional mobile signals struggle. Supporting longer battery life: Its energy-efficient design helps wearable devices remain connected while reducing the need for frequent charging. Providing dedicated IoT connectivity: LTE-M is designed for connected devices, supporting dependable communication for alerts and emergency calls. Offering greater independence and reassurance: More reliable connectivity can help older people feel safer while maintaining their independence. Confidence when it matters most Although no mobile technology can guarantee coverage everywhere, LTE-M can help extend the reach of emergency care devices in areas where connectivity is challenging. When combined with intelligent fall detection, reliable monitoring and a responsive care service, it can provide an important additional layer of reassurance. For older adults and their families, better connectivity is more than a technical improvement. It can help ensure that when assistance is needed, a call for help has a better chance of getting through.

  • Dementia and Cognitive Support from Companion

When a relative or loved one is suffering with Dementia or similar cognitive impairments, it can create something of a dilemma when it comes to their wellbeing and happiness. One the one hand, they clearly need an extended level of care, which is something they may even admit themselves. On the other hand, their independence is extremely valuable to them despite living with cognitive impairments. Managing care for a dementia patient can be a balancing act between ensuring their happiness and wellbeing. Living independently and safely for as long as possible is often the goal as none of us would ever want to be forced out of their home to live somewhere new and unfamiliar. This can be a delicate subject, especially when the patient is living in a family house, or a home they’ve been in for a long time. None of us would ever want to be forced out of our homes to live somewhere new and unfamiliar, so it’s understandable that they wouldn’t either. So, how can we give you the best of both worlds? With a Companion Watch, of course! By configuring your watch to either Cognitive Support or Dementia Support, you can keep a watchful eye over the daily activities of the wearer, without having to routinely call or visit to check on them. Thanks to the watch’s built-in falls detection and GPS tracking systems, you can have peace of mind knowing that if anything happens, you’ll be notified quickly. Cognitive Support Vs Dementia Support We created the Companion Watch to accompany you and your loved ones all the way through your wellness journey. Sometimes, a change in your cognitive or physical condition could mean that your needs change, too. If this happens, your Companion can be reconfigured to reflect your new activities and routine, ensuring consistent support for you and your care network. Which option should I choose? It depends entirely on the physical and cognitive wellness of the watch wearer. For example: If you or your loved one are experiencing the early stages of Dementia, Alzheimers or a similar condition that mildly affects day-to-day living, then try your Companion Watch in the Cognitive Support configuration. If you or your loved one are suffering with more advanced Dementia, Alzheimers or similar conditions where cognitive and motor abilities are severely impaired, try opting for the Dementia Support option. Remember, we can easily reconfigure the watch if your chosen option becomes unsuitable for the wearer’s lifestyle, so there is no need to worry if things change. What’s the difference between the two? Between the two configurations, we have dialled down the wearer’s ability to use the watch’s functions themselves, and we have removed some of the chimes and alerts that would ordinarily sound through the watch. The idea here is to reduce the potential for confusion or anxiety - remember, a new piece of tech may be daunting to an elderly Dementia patient. A fashionable new watch, however, is a lot easier to understand, and more likely to be worn regularly. Check out the comparison below to learn the differences: Cognitive Support Dementia Support Cognitive Support configuration limits the wearer’s ability to operate the functions of the watch, and with it, the chance of confusion or anxiety on the wearer’s behalf. New or complicated technology can be daunting for some, so making the wearer’s life easier makes them more likely to continue using the watch. Dementia Support configuration completely removes the wearer’s ability to operate the Companion watch. Behind the scenes, it is still collecting wellness data, tracking GPS and will still raise the alarm in the event of a fall. To the wearer, however, it is simply a stylish new timepiece. This ensures the watch wearer is being safely monitored with minimal confusion. All the wearer has to do is put their watch on in the morning, and return it to its charging cradle when the battery is low. The watch also brings comfort to the wearer, as they are safe in the knowledge that if they do fall, a family member will automatically be alerted, and help will soon be at hand. The intelligent Companion watch can register when the wearer has a fall, thanks to its in-built accelerometer. In the event of the fall, the watch will begin to raise alerts to those monitoring the watch, who then have the option to call the watch directly to check on the wearer. Alerts are triggered only when a fall is detected. GPS Tracking and Wandering Alarm The Companion tracks the watch wearer’s location constantly while being worn, meaning you can monitor the wearer’s wellbeing while ensuring they retain their independence. Depending on your configuration, you can set up “Safe Zones” that the wearer regularly visits, or you can have the watch begin tracking as soon as the wearer leaves their home. If a fall is detected, the watch will securely share its GPS location, helping you to find and assist the wearer. Find out more about Companion’s GPS tracking Cognitive Support Dementia Support Watch will track GPS outside of the home only if Safe Zones are set up. Watch will track GPS outside of the home without needing Safe Zones to be set up. The Companion App – Offering Reassurance 24/7 The Companion Watch is empowering family members/circle of care (up to 8 people) with full and easy access to the watch wearers wellness and activity data via their mobile, tablet or desktop devices. In all configurations, wellness data is measured and collected by the watch constantly. This can be viewed through the user portal and utilised to keep tabs on the wearer's general health and mobility. Family members have peace of mind that if any excessive variability in health metrics is detected, this will be alerted to them via the app. Your Companion Watch collects wellness data including: Activity and no-movement If the watch isn’t worn, or the watch detects no movement for a period of time, then a no-movement alarm is raised. Heart rate Heart rate is recorded every 10 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes at night. Respiratory rate Respiratory rate is also recorded, and any spikes or anomalies in data are visible through the app. Learn more about the Companion App What if the wearer requires less care? The Companion Watch can help with this too! Check out our configurations for Active Living At Home Support or Care Referral.

  • Fall Detection: Consumer Expectations vs Product Reality

Wrist-worn and pendant-based fall detection devices play an important role in helping older people and vulnerable individuals live more independently by making them feel safer - reassured by the fact that the device will detect and raise help in the event of a fall. However, consumers expectation is high, that modern care devices are going to work every time - when in reality they do not. Over selling and under delivering The following companies advertise care devices for fall detection, and the following verified customer reviews reveal an insight into the practical problems people encountered with products and services on which they have placed considerable trust. The following reviews are not simply negative opinions, they contain specific accounts of real situations in which customers say the service did not meet their expectations when they needed it. Furthermore, these reviews do not establish the scale of the problem. However, every incident affects a real person and deserves to be taken seriously, and should not simply be a failure statistic. Yourstride Advert quote example: "UK's Best Fall Alarm Watch" Example Yourstride Trustpilot Reviews: Telecare24 Advert quote example: "Within seconds of a fall alarm being triggered we'll be speaking to you through the base unit" Example Telecare24 Trustpilot Reviews: Careline365 Advert quote example: "Britain's No 1 Fall Alarm Service" Example Careline365 reviews on Trustpilot and Reviews.io CPR Guardian Advert quote example:"Easy to use fall alert watch" Example CPR Guardian Trustpilot Reviews: Apple Watch Advert quote example:"Fall detection at the ready" Apple spend billions on product development yet they too don't meet customer expectation, as demonstrated during this live BBC interview with Sheila Hancock who was wearing an Apple Watch: For more on customer reviews follow these Trustpilot links: Careline365 >, CPR Guardian >, Telecare24 >, Yourstride > So why is fall detection technology falling short of consumer expectation? Someone buys a fall-detection device because they believe it will help protect the wearer, so these reviews highlight the following areas of weakness: Product design: devices repeatedly generating false alarms, undermining confidence in the service. System reliability: wearers falling and the automatic detection failing to trigger. Alert transmission: Fall alerts failing to reach the intended recipients due to network communication issues. Usability: the expectation of elderly service users to frequently test the service to ensure it's working. Then expected to perform device or service resets. System outages: Fall alerts failed to reach the intended recipients because service availability has been unreliable. What Companion Watch offers in response No technology solution is perfect but all good suppliers should be continually evolving and improving their products and service, based on their learnings. Companion's approach is exactly that. Over many years we have made significant progress towards addressing most of the technical shortcomings, highlighted by the above competitor customer reviews: Product design: A Companion watch has multiple on-board sensors (altitude, impact & movement) which it uses to identify a potential fallen and no movement, so unable to help themselves. Automatic alerts, and a telephone call, are then raised to the support network. The Companion Watch has a market leading battery life of 5 days (average), so the watch will have plenty of charge when it's needed most. Dialling back the fall detection sensitivity, to reduce false alerts, is a trade off, as it reduces the chance of detecting a fall too. Instead, Companion and it's product partners (including Philips, the electronics' specialist) spent 4 years developed the best possible fall detection algorithm solution - removing the need to override fall detection sensitivity. The wearer can press the cancel button if they experience an unwanted fall alert. System reliability: Wrist based fall detection is not always able to detect the wide range of fall types, so we educate our customers to use the SOS button to raise help if they need it. To reduce points of technology failure Companion Watches connects directly to the LTE-M network, eliminating any additional connectivity points of failure (like base stations/landlines, WiFi or a mobile phone). Approved account holders (selected family member(s)) are able to securely see frequent updates on Watch health, and wearers wellbeing, via the Companion App or web portal. Alert transmission: Companion Watches use an innovative communications technology (called LTE-M) which enables the watch to raise alerts in poor & weak mobile network signal areas (when a telephone call would not be possible). Companion do not allow a watch to be sold if the wearers local network signal strength does not meet our requirements. We also double check signal strength once the watch is in the wearers home. To maximise the chance of alert delivery, up to 8 family and friends can be assigned as support contacts. Furthermore, Companion Watches raise alerts via telephone calls, mobile app notifications and backup emails - tailored for each support contact. Companion Watch customers have cut out the middle man (the call centre) reducing a point of failure. Family are more up to date with the wearers circumstances and health conditions so they are able to make better more informed, quicker, decisions in an emergency. Usability: Companion watches have been designed to be simple timepieces for the wearer. All watch features and settings are managed remotely via the Companion App or with help from the customers named Companion Advisor. System outages: Companion are proud of it's excellent systems up time with service availability statistics and planned down time alerts - all transparent and available to our customers. Companion monitors watch network connectivity, raising alerts to the support network, if the watch experiences a network outage. In Summary When choosing a wearable care device for fall detection, ensure it has; A long battery life with fast re-charging, so it's going to work when you need it most. Multiple fall detection sensors coupled with advanced algorithms to detect real fall scenarios. Ability to raise help in poor/weak mobile signal areas. Reduced points of technology failure, so reduce reliance on base stations, WiFi or connectivity to a mobile phone. Good service reliability. Check your service provider offers excellent systems up time and are transparent about their service outages (and how they will ensure any outage doesn't happen again). In an emergency who's going to know the best course of action? who has the most up to date detail on the wearers circumstances and health conditions - a call centre or your family and friends. So consider cutting out the middle man.
